1855 was the beginning of the first proud student community at Penn State when it opened its classroom doors. And 15 years later, the Penn State Alumni Association was formed; signifying that the graduation stage wasn't the end. It only takes one question for it to be quite apparent, "Where did you go to college?" It's two simple words we say with strength and grace, "Penn State." We find pride from the experiences we create, the relationships we build and the obstacles we overcome; we find it within ourselves. Penn State pride; it comes not only from our own success, but the success of others. Why does it matter?

Because "WE ARE... PENN STATE!"

The commitment to serve others is an easy decision for Penn State alumni. With gratitude, we are quick to help others as we've been helped in our own lives. Whether it's raising funds to help future Penn State students pay for their first set of college textbooks, or donating for a cause such as THON, we're there. And soon, community service projects and a scholarship fund. The human experience never ends, so why should the act of giving?Because "WE ARE... PENN STATE!"

"JoePa," "Papa Joe," or simply, "Coach," whichever you prefer... there's nothing greater than bleeding blue and white on the field or off the field. Penn State Athletics are truly legendary and are celebrated every chance we get. Whether it's one win or 400 wins, each game gives us the opportunity to shout loud and proud, "Congratulations Coach Paterno and Coach Morett!" [400 career wins in football and field hockey, 2010]. We celebrate the achievements of new Penn Staters going off to college for the first time, as if it was our first time. We're anxious to hear from a Penn State special guest at every Annual Luncheon, eager to praise him or her and discover what it is about them that helps make Penn State so special. Why do we celebrate our lives with a Nittany Lion spirit?

Because "WE ARE... PENN STATE!"

ABOUT WELCOME FELLOW PENN STATERS, FRIENDS & FAMILY!With more than 600 PSU alumni living here in Southern Arizona (and several hundreds more in the Phoenix area), the Nittany Lion spirit is alive and well in the great Southwest.The Chapter sponsors various events throughout the year, beginning with the much-anticipated football season. This season we're watching the Penn State football games at The Depot Sports Bar & Grill located at 3501 E. Fort Lowell Rd. Check our website calendar for weekly game day details. Again this year, we will have some fun Penn State raffle items on display throughout football season. Money raised in the raffle goes to purchase Penn State Bookstore gift cards for students from Southern Arizona who are currently enrolled at Penn State.Our annual luncheon takes place on the last Sunday of each January. Previous guest speakers at the luncheon included: Dr. Robert Shaler, founding director of the Penn State forensic science program (2011); Thomas Palchak, manager of the Penn State Creamery manager (2010); and John Black, editor of the Penn State Football Letter (2009). Other events include: the student send-off picnic, representing Penn State at the recruiting booth for college-bound students at the Tucson College Fair, participating in the Tucson Big Ten Tailgate, fundraising for the PSU Tucson "Walk-a-THON," and monthly Happy Hours.This website, the E-mail Updates and the "Paw Prints from the Desert" newsletter are the best ways to learn about any and all things “Penn State” in Southern Arizona -- information about activities and upcoming events will be posted here and announced in the e-mails and newsletters.Finally, we are always looking for new ideas and new people to help make the Chapter the best it can be. SERVICE FUNDRAISINGBookstore Gift Cards: Chapter members donate funds from the football season raffle prize tickets and additional donations to help area students who will attend Penn State in the fall or spring each year. Each new Penn Stater receives a gift card every academic year until graduation to help them pay for their books at the Penn State Bookstore in State College.Football Funds: Each football celebration is a cause for more fundraising. For every touchdown or field goal celebrated at our football parties, chapter members add change and bills to the Penn State blue piggy bank. All funds in the Tucson Chapter's name benefits Penn State's THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world that raises awareness and over $69 million dollars since 1977 for the fight against pediatric cancer.COMMUNITY SERVICEThe First Annual Spring "Walk-a-THON" community service fundraiser is scheduled for March 2011 to benefit Penn State's THON. Kids are #1! Together, we'll make a difference in the life of a child. SCHOLARSHIPSA scholarship fund will be planned in the near future.
